The last nine months have been an interesting time for the local economy but I am pleased to say Huntingdon has weathered the storm – so far. So whilst being confident we are never complacent, the town needs nurturing and constant attention to detail. Thank you to everyone who supports the “look” and prosperity of the town, from the HDC street cleaning team through to the “In Bloom” group.
The good news is a pet shop is due to open in Chequers Court and the large unit currently promoting Huntingdon Regional College is under offer. D-lites, the café in All Saints Passage, is now open under new management. This brings the number of empty retail premises down to 16 of which 4 are under offer! Sadly the anticipated good news for the M&S Simply Food unit in Huntingdon has stumbled but with the activity in the town at other empty premises we hope that the larger units will attract a new venture very soon. More news when I have confirmation!
Entertainment in town over the summer has been well supported by Churchmanor. Free modelled balloons were on offer this week and the trampolines will be back following a successful trial in the square at Chequers Court.
Looking to the future the events for the Autumn are looking good. The 8th Continental Market takes place from Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th October. Our successful Farmers Market has a series of special events planned starting with a Big Cheese event on Friday 2 October supported by a Food Festival Big Cheese cooking demonstration. More details can be found on the web site below for future events focusing on apples, bangers and the environment.
Support for the Fairtrade status in Huntingdon is gathering pace with an inaugural meeting on Friday 16 October. Come and taste a variety of Fairtrade wine, take part in a “just for fun” quiz and find out more about this initiative at All Saints Church at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.
The Christmas lights “Big Switch On” event is taking place on Sunday 22 November – put the date in your diary. This community focused celebration encourages participation from a wide variety of community groups. Please contact us using the details below.
Have you heard of a Christmas tree festival? This popular event took place in St Ives in 2008 and will be at the Methodist Church Huntingdon High Street from 4th to 6th December 2009, raising money for three special charities. Entries from individuals, local groups and businesses are welcomed. The trees are supplied for £10 all you do is bring lights and decorations. Entry forms should be in by 21 October to
