News & Crier Article
Edition dated 11 August 2011

I often get asked “Who do you work for and what do you do?”  In brief, my role at Huntingdon Town Partnership (HTP) is to coordinate and support activities that make Huntingdon a better place.  I am employed by Huntingdon Town Partnership and work very closely with all local authorities, but I am not employed by the Town, District or County Council. The HTP Members and supporters have created the organisation as it is today – work that started in 1998. The wide variety of projects HTP is involved with can be viewed at www.huntingdontownpartnership.co.uk.

Being passionate about Huntingdon is the starting point for my role and it was fantastic to see the town looking its best last Tuesday when the Britain in Bloom judges came to town.  Huntingdon was entered in Britain in Bloom based on the regional success in 2010, when for the second successive year a gold was awarded by Anglia in Bloom.  There are only 4 other towns in the Large Town category, so Huntingdon has beaten a great deal of competition to get this far.  The judging route included Hinchingbrooke School, the Hospital, the Railway Station, the town centre and the Cemetery, where the judges considered our stunning floral displays (50% of the marks) plus environmental responsibility, including lack of litter/fly-posting in the town (25%), and community participation (25%).  Thank you to the Huntingdon in Bloom team led by Peter Jackson and everyone who joined in to present Huntingdon at its best. I was part of the town centre task group cleaning up the evening before.  The results will be announced for Anglia in Bloom on 13 September and for Britain in Bloom on the 25 September.  Good luck!

The sun is cracking the pavements and we have just held our first Christmas meeting to plan the Switch On event on Sunday 27 November!  Thank you to representatives from HCR fm, Huntingdon Youth Theatre and Fairtrade who attended the first meeting.  The Christmas event committee has achieved a lot and the plans are underway to turn on the lights and have a great community event.  There will be more details nearer the time.  Please contact me if you would like to get involved!

If you have not tuned in to Huntingdon Community Radio fm, on 104fm – do it now.  The impact of this 24/7 local radio reaches well beyond the boundary of Huntingdon.  There is a rapidly growing audience with over 50 people phoning in every day from all over Huntingdonshire.  So phone in with your request or dedication, advertise your business, sponsor a show, or listen out to help your community.  For example last week there was a request for witnesses to come forward following a major theft at a jewellers shop in St Ives, bringing the community together against crime.  Call HCR fm on 01480 414104 www.hcrfm.co.uk.
