News & Crier Article
Edition dated 17 February 2011
Investors willing to invest their money in Huntingdon are the life blood of the town and in 2011 if the plans fall in to place we will see some big investment in the town and surrounding area.  As a market town we also rely on independent businesses, people with a vision and courage to invest.

An example of just such a business is Barney’s Plaice which has just moved next door to bigger premises at 22 High Street, the Singer Sewing shop.  Ten years ago Mus opened Barney’s Plaice, a fish and chip shop where “a car went by every 10 minutes”, it is now a successful business bringing footfall to Huntingdon throughout every day!

At the end of 2010 another new venture was launched, a weekly Crafts and Collectables Market in the Commemoration Hall.  I am pleased to say this indoor market is now on every Friday from 8.30am to 3pm and the entrepreneur who started the market is keen to hear from anyone who would like a stall for their business venture.  Call Chris on 07711 391003, this could be a great venue for your new business idea!  To help you on your way Business Link have a wide range of courses that will support new and developing businesses in the eastern region including varied courses throughout the spring at The Marriott Hotel.  Look on line at www.startupbusinesslinkeast.co.uk.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 28 February to 13 March and here in Huntingdon there is a lot to shout about.  Supporting the “Shop Local” message is vital but it is good to stop and think how we can help other communities overseas and those less fortunate than ourselves.  This year the Fairtrade Group is launching the very first Fairtrade Directory detailing the local supporters of Fairtrade, including shops, cafes, restaurants, schools, churches, and businesses.  Sponsored by Huntingdon Town Council, it is hoped that the Directory will grow as more organisations sign up to the Fairtrade message.  To celebrate Fairtrade the annual Fairtrade Concert takes place on Friday 4 March, 7.30pm at All Saints Church in the Market Square.  Tickets £5 adults, £1 children and students available from Jo Fisher 01480 453554 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  This is followed by the Huntingdon Fairtrade Coffee Morning which is backing the Fairtrade Foundation to break a world record for the longest Fairtrade cotton bunting on Saturday 12 March 10am to 12.30am at All Saints Church.  Everyone welcome.

Finally, a date for your diary is the 4th Riverside Gala on 11 June 2011 .  Bookings for stall are being taken now on tel: 01480 456963 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
