New & Crier article Huntingdon Town Partnership Date 8 October 2010 This summer we are very proud of the Huntingdon in Bloom team who swept the board in the Eastern Region with the awards for top town in the region, Best Large Town and a GOLD award! This is yet another reason for visitors to come to Huntingdon in 2011 to see the high standard set by the grounds staff at the Town and District Councils and the hard work of Peter Jackson and Huntingdon In Bloom volunteers. Huntingdon is now entered in Britain in Bloom 2011.
Developments are top of the agenda again in October. A planning application to build a new supermarket has been submitted by Lidl and further applications are expected from Sainsbury’s, relating to the existing and propsed new site, in October. Details of the Lidl plan can be seen at www.huntsdc.gov.uk/planning and comments should be submitted in the next couple of weeks for inclusion in decision making process. More news on the Sainsbury’s application next month www.sainsburys-huntingdon.co.uk. The Christmas Lights Committee is working hard to raise the funds for the Christmas Lights and Big Switch On 2010. All the businesses have been asked to contribute £10 or more and we are very grateful for all donations which can be sent c/o Huntingdon Town Partnership. The businesses that have contributed to date are: Luminus Group, Harrold Opticians, Alexanders, Carey Amusements, Ocean House Chinese Takeaway, Cash Convertors, Level 2, Adagio Beauticians, Specsavers, Workman & Partners, Churchmanor Estates, Rosamunds, Trisportsplus.co.uk, WHSmith and The Retro Sweet Shop. Waitrose have included the Christmas Lights in the “Community Matters” for local causes and £200 has been donated by the Continental Market traders who gave £10 each towards the Christmas funds. Huntingdon Town Council (HTC) took over responsibility for the installation of the lights in 2009. Proposals to upgrade some or all of the christmas lights, to meet the led regulations, are being considered by HTC. A contribution of £1250 towards this project has been ring fenced from the 2009 fundraising. The total cost of the installation of lights and the Big Switch On costs in the region of £10 - £12,000. The Big Switch On event takes place on Sunday 28 November between 1pm and 5pm. The future of the Town Park is high on the agenda as green spaces are becoming increasingly important and even more so in Huntingdon with the level of development being undertaken. A Friends of Huntingdon Town Park group was discussed last week at a second meeting of Town Park supporters. If you have an interest in the park and want to get involved contact Claire Tunnicliffe at Huntingdon Town Council on 01480 388688 Finally don’t forget to shop local! There are more new businesses in Huntingdon - Cash for Gold opened in Newton’s Court and Spize Market is due to open at 72 High Street.
